We do love the fireplace now that it is finished, but it really took some work to stain it like we wanted. When we received it, we were so excited. It looked great and ready to be stained. When preparing to stain, I noticed some of the pieces were not solid wood and had a wood veneer over them. Some of the places were loose and required to be glued. After that I started staining just to find out that all over the mantle and surround were places the stain would not take. It looked like it had a terrible rash. I was nearly in tears. I thought we were going to have to paint it and that is not what we wanted. My husband called Hayneedle and they refunded our money. We thought about what to do and decided to sand the whole thing back down and start over. There must have been a fine coat of glue or something all over the whole thing, because after that the stain took. And now we have a beautiful fireplace.
Just make sure if you are going to stain that you sand everywhere and you may even have to do some extra sanding on some spots, we did have to do that some too. If you are going to paint, you probably won't have any problems at all.
It will end up being a great fireplace. For all of the extra work, we do thank Hayneedle for refunding our money.
