1. Measure the space where you wish to add a mantel shelf.
2. Determine if you want to add a mantel shelf or a full surround with a mantel shelf attached.
3. Although commonly associated with fireplaces, mantel shelves are convenient anywhere.
4. If to be placed conventionally above a fireplace, a mantel shelf needs to be at least the same length if not wider than the fireplace.
