The smooth front of this Kettle Moraine Hardwoods Clymer Rustic Fireplace Mantel Shelf has the few-furrowed natural bark of the butternut tree. Cut in a generous 60-inch slab, its natural veins and knots give a hearty accent to the stone or brickwork of your fireplace area. Butternut wood is closely related to American Black Walnut but with a coarser grain and lighter, more golden color.
Please note: Mantel shelf will vary slightly from the one shown. Because each log is different, each mantel has its own unique grain and characteristics. These differences do not affect the structural strength of the mantel.

This is a beautiful piece of wood with lots of character. The only thing we did not like was the depth. The description is clear that every piece is different and the depth can range from 8-12". We were hoping for the higher number - believe ours is barely or a little less than 8". Therefore, it looks a little small on our brick fireplace.

I was very nervous about ordering this on-line but am quite happy. It looks very different from the picture, no yellow tones, a nice piece of raw wood. I applied tung oil to it which really brought out the natural beauty. Also it was about 63.5" not 60. We mounted it with 4 1/2" lag screws so no brackets showing. Looks great with stone fireplace and is a good buy.
